2020 update
As of 2020 more phones works with Android DACs. We will shortly add more to the current phone compatibility
Older phones
This is a tread to gather experiences on what phones works and doesn’t work with the Hifime DACs. Please submit your phone model and software version if it is not listed below.
In general, the Android and Tiny model works with most phones as it uses a simpler and older USB receiver chip (PCM2706).
Android Lollipop 5.0 is supposed to support USB DACs out of the box, however it seems that some phone makers still haven’t implemented DAC support even for 5.0
Hifimediy Android and Tiny DAC
This is the recommended DAC for Android, as it works with most phones, and the Android model comes with a microUSB cable that plugs directly into the phone
Should work with most Android phones running android 4.2.2 and above.
Note: Several reports that the sound is mono with the Tiny/Android models under Android 6.X – Please send a message if you have it working in stereo in Android 6 with this model.

HiFime Sabre 9018 work perfectly with OnePlus One running Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 (custom rom Resurrection Remix v5.6.8).
With all the apps that i tested it (Spotify, Pandora, Soundcloud, YouTube, Google Play Music, default media player) there is no problem.
Occasionally AudioFX is crushing, but doesn’t seem to be problem.A

The Amazon Fire 7″ (2015) works great with both the Sabre Android EX9023 DAC and the Sabre 9018 USB DAC. I put a review up on my blog at http://t-amps.blogspot.com/2016/05/fire-7-2015-and-android-otg-audio.html. Thanks so much for the DACs!

@Александр Вершинин – Can you explain about Rk3066, Rk3188 Head units how you use them?
And do you mean that the etc/audio_policy.conf edit work with that app only or general in Lollipop?A
Alexander Vershinin
said 4 years ago
@Hifime
About audio_policy.conf in Lollipop – generally, look at “How to enable USB audio policy” here – https://source.android.com/devices/audio/usb.html
(on this way the USB device can work with the maximum SR and bit depth which it hardware supports – may be checked by viewing of /proc/asound/device_name/stream0 when play sound).
About RK3066, RK3188 HU – look at my DIY http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66707293&postcount=47 (PPS at the end describes the specifics of use in case of HU’s design).
Please, ask me any questions, will be glad to help.

@Александр Вершинин Thanks!
Some saying the Tiny DAC with PCM2706 USB chip only plays in mono in Android 6. Any idea what can cause that, and could it be fixed in the etc/audio_policy.conf settings or elsewhere?A
Alexander Vershinin
said 4 years ago
@Hifime
I think it may only happen because in the etc/audio_policy.conf
channel_masks is dynamic
usb_device {
sampling_rates dynamic
channel_masks dynamic
formats dynamic
devices AUDIO_DEVICE_OUT_USB_DEVICE
}
It should be changed to:
channel_masks AUDIO_CHANNEL_OUT_STEREO

@Alexander Vershinin
I tried setting channel_masks AUDIO_CHANNEL_OUT_STEREO and then rebooting, but it didn’t fix the mono issue.
I also checked /proc/asound/cardX/stream0 (card1 in my case, and there was both stream0 and stream1), but both ‘files’ are empty/blank. (I checked the files when music was already playing).
My device: Nexus 7 2013, Stock Android 6.0.1, rooted.
USB DAC = 2013 version of HiFimeDIY Sabre USB DAC ES9023 96kHz/24bit (w/ Tenor chip).
Any other ideas?A

@Jack Jennings Well, I made some reformat:
Burr-Brown from TI USB Audio DAC at usb-xhci-hcd.0.auto-1, full speed : USB Audio
Playback:
Status: Running
Interface = 1
Altset = 2
Packet Size = 96
Momentary freq = 48000 Hz (0x30.0000)
Interface 1
Altset 1
Format: S16_LE
Channels: 2
Endpoint: 2 OUT (ADAPTIVE)
Rates: 32000, 44100, 48000
Interface 1
Altset 2
Format: S16_LE
Channels: 1
Endpoint: 2 OUT (ADAPTIVE)
Rates: 32000, 44100, 48000
And you can see that TI USB-reciever chip has two Altsets – 1 for 2 channels (stereo), 2 – for 1 channel (mono), but for unknown reasons Altset 2 has been used for output. I have no idea except some problem exists with setup hw parameters in the moment of USB-DAC detecting in the system. To see that try to install CatLog from google play and post here logs of the moment you pluging your DAC and starting playing (run catlog, plug in dac, start play, stop catlog, save and post it here).J

I’ve reformatted both that log file and a small device info file using Excel, then saved back into txt files so they’re much easier to read. Formatted as UTF-8 as requested and attached to this post. Let me know if this isn’t what you need…TXTdeviceinfo.txt(672 Bytes)TXT2016-05-22-1…(65 KB)

@Jack Jennings WOW! You should better save it in UTF-8 text file and post here a link to a cloud. Or at least use Code Snippet… Ok, I repaired it already. Align to log, you have ALSA installed in your system. Could you check /etc/asound.conf exists and post it (link or code snippet) here?

Nothing called asound.conf in the ETC/ folder 🙁
I have apns.conf, audio_effects.conf, audio_platform_info.xml, audio_policy.conf and a few others like mixer_paths.xml and media_profiles.xml…
Thanks by the way, I really appreciate the effort!
Is it worth my capturing a log from when I use USB Audio Player Pro to play music (where it works properly)?A
Alexander Vershinin
said 4 years agoWell, that means alsa is on audiodriver layer only in your ROM. I can’t find any unusual in your log. So I think the problem is more deeper than we can fix. UAPP’s log is not helpfull, becase UAPP uses its own usb audio drivers. There is nothing to compare.J

@jmarie, you have to enable developer mode.
Go to Settings > About device > Build number
Tap Build number seven times. After the first few taps, you should see the steps counting down until you unlock the developer options. Once activated, you will see a message that reads, “You are now a developer!”
Go back to Settings, where you’ll find a Developer options entry in the menu.

Do you have any thoughts?

UAE23 USB DAC (ESS Sabre ES9023+Savitech SA9023)
It seems that works on w764 home premium sp1 over a gigabite b85m-d3h motherboard, the volume and clarity of music has increased, above all volume..quality and clarity are a bit crisp from what i`ve benn listening.
I have nice flac files and nice active speakers, so..
But positively surprised for the price, to say.
what i have to do to make it work over android both 5.1.1 , 4.4.2 and jelly bean? (if it could) or there`s one that works?
Usb audio player pro is needed?

said a year agoFirst of all, for the best quality you need a bitperfect music streaming, without any affecting of OS mixer . Under Win7 you can use Foobar with ASIO drivers for that or WASAPI out at least. For bitperfect under Android you can use USB Audio Player Pro (UAPP is the best) or other direct players like Neutron, Onkyo, Hiby – all of them has their own usb audio drivers and streams audio directly to USB-DAC. But notice, they all monopolizes USB-DAC, so system cant use it at one moment. If you want all apps play through the DAC under Android, your need to check your ROM has snd_usb_audio driver first. Check this folder exists /sys/module/snd_usb_audio. Then open /proc/asound/cards as text to check your dac determined there. But you need the root access for further doing, so I will not go to the deep of that for now. I have tab a tm-280 too. It is bad for usb audio in case it uses dwc_otg usb driver from DisignWare. You can find info about interrupts from that driver and clicks and pops in sound of usb dac on Raspberry PI forums. You can try to use your tm-280 with UAPP with tweak#1 and 16 bit limitation. But any processor/bus load will be heared as a multiple clicks. So I not recommend that. I think better find any old SGS4 or any newer device for usb audio with usb host function.C

Your answer is very appreciate to me!
So i don`t have options to use it without rooting and so, so i`ll use it on the computer and anything else, such a pitty, even though i always was conscious of it, so, well…
So, a device with usb audio with usb host function will manage the dac without problems or clics through Poweramp or UAPP?
Excuse me if i didn`t understand something.
